Vision Statement

The Academic Foundations Program will support the Missions of New Jersey City University and the William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences by offering basic skills courses in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics that enable students to build the necessary academic skills for success at the University and beyond. The Academic Foundations Program recognizes its vital role among wider University efforts to fulfill the Urban Mission, specifically in working to maximize student access to an excellent education and improving retention and graduation rates. The Academic Foundations Program will, through a centralized office, implement and maintain a variety of placement and support services to meet the changing academic needs of its students, including an innovative and rigorous basic skills curriculum with standardized as well as program- and course-specific outcomes assessment; advisement; faculty and professional tutoring; peer tutoring and mentoring; academic counseling; and instructional technology services. The Academic Foundations Program is committed to the ongoing project of assessing its contribution to student learning and academic success, and to improving on its past performance through the regular implementation of program revisions as well as by securing and supporting the necessary faculty, staff, and resources to ensure that this vision becomes a reality.
