Peter Cruz, a 2006 graduate in our Music, Dance, and Theatre program will be performing Philip Glass' "Concerto Fantasy for two Timpanists and Orchestra" with acclaimed percussionist Jonathan Haas and the San Francisco Ballet at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Concert Hall, in August 2010 (several performances). Peter and Jon have previously performed this work with the San Fransisco Ballet in San Fransisco, CA and in New York City. Pete Cruz and Jonathan Haas also performed this concerto with the University of Akron Symphony Orchestra in Akron, OH.
 
Peter is also preparing to begin performing as a substitute player in the Lion King orchestra accompanying the Broadway performance of The Lion King.

Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, a 2010 graduate from our Art Department's MFA program (see below for more) has a piece in the group show "Water" on exhibiton at the Atlantic Gallery in Chelsea. The show opens on June 23 and runs through July 23.  On Tuesday, July 13 the gallery is hosting a panel discussion about the show.
Ms. Ficarelli-Halpern, along with NJCU Professors José Rodeiro and Raul Villareal, is also showing in "Melting Pot," an exhibit opening at the Passaic Public Library on July 18.  See the "Faculty News" page for more details.

Gianluca Bianchino, a 2002 graduate from our Art Department was among the artists whose work was selected for a major portrait exhibition entitled “Who We Are: CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITS" running at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery, Annunciation Center, College of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, NJ (for other NJCU-connected artists in the show, visit the "Faculty News" link.
The exhibition will run throughout the summer until mid-August. An opening reception (with wine and refreshments) is scheduled for Thursday, June 10, 2010, 4:30 – 7:00 PM at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery Annunciation Center, College of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, NJ 07960. 

Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, a 2010 graduate from our Art Department's MFA program, has a piece ("Kaleidoscope") included in "BabyDoll: Female Artists View of Contemporary Women," currently on exhibit at the Broadway Gallery in Soho.  The exhibition will be on view from June 1-15 and features the work of sixteen contemporary women artists.

On 26 May, the Hudson Area Math Alliance (HAMA) honored 3 NJCU math BA graduates with certification who were alums from Hudson County public schools. Honored were ( pictured left to right): Juliette Cabrera (Memorial High School WNY graduate) Elizabeth Manfrede (Bayonne High School raduate) and Dorota Miedzwiedz (Dickinson High School graduate).
 
Our students received a certificate and a monetary award.

Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, 2010 MFA graduate and  (NJCU Kappa Pi member), has had her work selected for inclusion in the 2010 New Prints Exhibition at The International Print Center New York, on view from May 18 - June 26th, in its new gallery space located at 508 West 26th Street, Room 5A, in Chelsea. The juror for this exhibition is world renowned artist Philip Pearlstein.
 

The  reception is Thursday, May 27th from 6-8PM.

OSP student and NJCU student Abraham Lopez is now Director of Hispanic Affairs for the Office of the Governor of NJ. 

2009 BA graduates in mathematics with certification hired to teach mathematics beginning in the fall:

On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, 12 Hudson area mathematics teachers were named Outstanding Math Teacher of the Year by the Hudson Area Math Alliance. Among those honored were the following NJCU alumni:

  • Ingrid Mancayo, math teacher at Union City High School North, BA/MA
  • Thomas Ruiz, math teacher at Edison, Union City, MA
  • Natasha Hosein, math teacher at Ferris High School, Jersey City, BA/MA
  • Sandra Rivera, math teacher at Dickinson High School, Jersey City, BA/MA
  • Marianne Kosakowski, math teacher at PS 16, Jersey City, BA/MA
  • Mary Sue Stevenson, math teacher at Robinson, Bayonne, BA
  • Zoila Correa, math teacher in West New York, BA

 
Also honored were 2009 NJCU BA graduates who majored in mathematics with their K-12 math certification (secondary) or middle-school math certification and graduated from a Hudson area public high school.

  • Milagros Gonzalez, BA in Music Education '09,has been appointed to the position of Vocal Music Teacher for two schools in Kearny: Garfield School K-6. and Franklin school K-8.
  • Clement Obichere, BA in Music Education '09, has been appointed Vocal Music Teacher K-8 at theAlexander Street Schooland the Alexander Street Annex in Newark.
  • Megan Sheridan, BA in Music Education '09, will be teaching General Music and heading the Newark Early Strings Program affiliated with the NJSO (New Jersey Symphony Orchestra) at Franklin School (K-4) in Newark, NJ.
  • Giancarlo Sari, MA in Music Education '08, recently appointed as Vocal/General Music Teacher PK-6 in Bayonne Public Schools.
  • Chris Colaneri, MA in Music Education '07,is the author of "Incorporating Total Percussion Into the Middle School Band Program" published by Verlag Publishing Company. The book has international distribution.
  • Thomas Mazur, MA in Music Education '04, recently appointed Supervisor of Fine, Practical and Performing Arts in the North Plainfield School District.
