Vision Statement
The Modern Languages Department of New Jersey City University will be recognized as a leader in the preparation of competent world language instructors in the state of New Jersey. It will achieve this goal by providing prospective and practicing teachers with: (1) a balanced curriculum designed to develop competencies in language, linguistics, literature, culture, and second language pedagogy; (2) a sound teacher preparation program that offers a Masters in World Language Education and courses for Alternate Route certification; and (3) an on-campus testing center that administers the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), currently required for teacher certification.
Mission Statement
The Modern Languages Department of New Jersey City University has a fivefold mission: (1) To contribute to the education of our students in the liberal arts, by fostering and facilitating the study of world languages and cultures; (2) to provide Spanish majors and minors with a comprehensive program that includes an understanding of language and linguistics as well as advanced-level study of the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world; (3) to prepare undergraduate students to enter the field of language education; (4) to expand the knowledge and skills of practicing world language teachers through graduate study that emphasizes second language pedagogy; and (5) to form collaborative partnerships with public schools and other institutions of higher education. As a department with a global perspective, we support and participate in institutional and community programs that promote first-hand and real-life experiences with languages and cultures, such as: study abroad, foreign exchange, interdisciplinary courses, language conferences and workshops, proficiency assessment, foreign language professional organizations, community service, field experience and internships, and cooperative education.
