The William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences honors a leader in State and national higher education, a steadfast supporter of New Jersey City University’s commitment to its urban mission, and a staunch advocate of urban education. Dr. William J. Maxwell (’58) earned a bachelor of science degree in education and social studies at NJCU (then Jersey City State College), and went on to earn both master’s and doctoral degrees at Columbia University. In 1961, he returned to this institution as a member of the faculty, and in the decades that followed he was a scholar, teacher, dean, president, and president emeritus. During Dr. Maxwell’s distinguished tenure as president (1974-1992), he led the successful campaign to secure passage of the state college autonomy legislation, which gave New Jersey’s four-year institutions control over their fiscal management, and guided the institution towards its goal of access and excellence in education. In 1992, Dr. Maxwell returned to the faculty as a Distinguished Service Professor of History and Education. In recognition of Dr. Maxwell’s vision, service, and outstanding contributions to higher education and to his beloved alma mater, the Board of Trustees of New Jersey City University approved the naming of the William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences. |
