 Mission Statement
 
Building on its diverse urban location, the mission of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at New Jersey City University is to teach theoretical and applied knowledge that focus on gender in relation to other social dynamics such as race, class and sexuality. Through an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum students will use gender and feminist analysis to understand the construction of individual identities and social systems within local and global contexts.
 
Core Beliefs
The WGST departments affirms core beliefs as fundamental to its mission:
  • The department values the resources of the urban setting and cultures in which the university is located.
  • The department promotes a scholarly and intellectual community built upon the diverse composition of its core and affiliated members, encouraging them to understand and solve urban challenges.
  • The department integrates technology and pedagogy to strengthen students’ understanding of the diversity of their communities.
  • The program enhances students’ ability to articulate a greater awareness of and engagement with the social implications and consequences of a multicultural world.
  • The department promotes intellectual curiosity, creativity, active learning, independent thought, and responsible citizenship.
Department Outcomes:
Students enrolled in the program will:
  • Locate women’s historical and contemporary contributions to culture and society Identify gender as a central category of analysis.
  • Illustrate how gender shapes individuals, families, communities, and nations Analyze historical and contemporary systems of privilege and oppression.
  • Apply current research on sexuality and gender across the disciplines
  • Explain how social institutions shape gender and how gender shape social institutions.
  • Evaluate intersections between gender and other axes of differences.
  • Develop basic skills in feminist research methodology Assess individual and collective forms of gender resistance.
  • Demonstrate oral communication, writing, technological, and critical thinking skills
