NJCU Receives $476,441 Grant from
US Department of Defense (DoD) to Enhance Scientific Research Opportunities for Students 

NJCU professor of chemistry and chair of  the Chemistry Department, Dr. Kenneth Yamaguchi, is the principal investigator (PI) of  the $476,441 grant from DoD's Infrastructure Support Program.  This grant will be used to enhance programs, research capabilities, and academic opportunities in scientific discipline critical to the national security functions of the Department of Defense.  It is also aimed at increasing the number of graduates, including underrepresented miniorities, in the field of science. NJCU students directly involve in the project also get rigorous research opportunities and training benefits.   Dr. Alberto Pinkas, NJCU associate professor and Chair of Physics Department, and Dr. Mark Richter, professor of chemistry at Missouri State University, are co-PIs of the research project.
 

NJCU PROJECT SEED Student Named as
ACS College Scholar 2008

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has awarded Amed Logrono of Union City, New Jersey the Bader Project SEED College Scholarship 2008 for his outstanding achievement in high school chemistry through excellence in the laboratory and academics.

The scholarship program aims to encourage economically disadvantaged students to pursue careers in the sciences by giving the awardee a one-year nonrenewable scholarship of up to $5,000 to help cover tuition and fees during his or her freshman year of college.

The Project SEED scholarship eligibility includes completion of a chemistry course in high school, meeting of income requirements, and obtaining a recommendation from a high school teacher. Students must also successfully work at least one summer at a science institute under the auspices of Project SEED.

Amed successfully completed a Summer Research Program on Microwave Synthesis of Substituted Pyrroles under the supervision of Project SEED mentor Dr. Kenneth Yamaguchi of New Jersey City University. He plans to pursue a degree in science at Brown University starting Fall 2008.  He is also one of the recepients of Nordstrom Scholarship Award in New Jersey.
