Welcome to
New Jersey City University Chemistry Department
OUR AIM AND VISION
The NJCU Chemistry Department aims to provide students an excellent chemical education and study environment to prepare them for success in a fast-growing, competitive, and challenging chemical sciences career. We offer students comprehensive educational programs linking theoretical concepts and hands-on activities to real-world chemical research and applied fields. Students are also encouraged to speak with faculty members to help plan a program of study. In our Bachelor of Science Program, students are introduced to concepts in general, organic, analytical/instrumental, inorganic, and physical chemistry. In addition, a selection of chemistry electives is available, such as biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, spectroscopic identification of organic compounds, advanced organic chemistry, chemical research, polymer chemistry, and industrial chemistry. Our hands-on laboratory courses offer state-of-the-art instrumentation, including ultraviolet-visible, fluorescence, liquid and gas chromatography, GC-MS, atomic absorption spectrometer, microwave-assisted synthesis, LC-MS, NMR, and more. This experience develops students’ technical skills and prepares them for a number of job options in the private sector, as well as opportunities in federal and state, and research institutions. Chemistry majors are provided with opportunities to professionally practice what they have learned through NJCU’s Cooperative Education or the Schering-Plough Scholarship Programs. Students can also engage in research projects with faculty mentors to provide rigorous training in scientific inquiry and knowledge, technical, literature, and analytical skills. Faculty research includes studies in medicinal, organic, and inorganic chemistry, spectroscopic and chromatographic characterization of natural products, material science, biochemical, and environmental science.
