Greeting our global community in:
Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.

The Modern Languages Department of New Jersey City University has a fivefold mission: (1) To contribute to the education of our students in the liberal arts, by fostering and facilitating the study of world languages and cultures; (2) To provide Spanish majors and minors with a comprehensive program that includes an understanding of language and linguistics as well as advanced-level study of the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world; (3) To help prepare undergraduate students to enter the field of language education; (4) To expand the knowledge and skills of participating world language teachers through graduate study that emphasizes second language pedagogy; and (5) To form collaborative partnerships with public schools and other institutions of higher education.

The Modern Languages Department hosts a chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Spanish Honor Society. Voces Latinas, a publication of student writing, is published annually. Each spring the Department hosts a month-long International Film Festival.

The Department offers elementary-level courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, and Russian, and a full curriculum in Spanish.
