New and Important ...
40th year of OSP at NJCU
Included among the gala events honoring New Jersey City University’s 80th year celebration is the 40th birthday of the University’s Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). OSP is the arm on this campus of the state’s Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), which was formed in 1968 to address the needs of disadvantaged students. Soon after the formation of EOF, OSP began as “Project Star.”
OSP will host a 40th anniversary celebration on Thursday, October 23rd in the Gothic Lounge, Hepburn 202, from 3 to 4:30 PM. This tribute to the great legacy of OSP at NJCU will feature guest speakers, remembrances of the four decades, and light refreshments, plus a few surprises. OSP alumni will be honored as well. OSP invites all to join in the festivities. EOF began when Thomas H. Kean, then New Jersey’s junior senator, and eleven state senators signed the bill that enacted the Educational Opportunity Fund Program. Since its inception, EOF has provided thousands of students with the resources and support needed to successfully graduate from a two or four year college/university in New Jersey. In addition to the OSP ceremony, college and university EOF programs are commemorating EOF’s forty years of service with a series of special events entitled “ Celebrating 40 Years of Success.” OSP is proud that EOF alumni continue to strive for excellence. OSP alumni are no exception. They continue to give back to their communities—as doctors, lawyers, teachers, elected officials, etc. Their contributions and legacy make OSP’s current students proud to say that they are products of such a remarkable program.
