Assistant Professor of Music Theory/Composition
Anticipated Vacancy

 Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2010

The William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences at New Jersey City University is seeking candidates for a tenure track position of Assistant Professor of Music Theory/Composition. In addition to teaching assignments, the successful candidate will help manage and coordinate all aspects of the enrollment process, staffing, recruitment, planning and scheduling.

Major duties and Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate would provide dynamic leadership primarily in the areas of music theory and composition, and secondarily in the areas of ear training and music history.  The candidate would teach undergraduate Harmony, Ear Training, Music History, Composition, Computer Music classes as well as a Graduate Musicianship class, and fulfill other responsibilities as required by the department.  The successful candidate will demonstrate competence in utilizing digital music applications and software tools, including Sibelius and Finale music notation systems. The candidate should also have the ability to evaluate scholarly writing in music classes and graduate thesis courses.

Education, Experience and Special Skills Required:

  • Required:  Master’s Degree in Music.
  • Preferred: PhD or DMA in Music Theory or Composition from an accredited institution.

Qualifications should include outstanding college-level teaching experience and published scholarly works in theory and/or composition.
