Assistant Professor Anticipated Vacancy
Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2010
The Department of Geoscience/Geography at New Jersey City University is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach introductory through advanced undergraduate courses, contribute to University-wide efforts to improve STEM learning outcomes, and sustain an active, community-based, undergraduate research program supported primarily through extramural funding.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach a 12-hour course load in subjects including, but not limited to:
Geochemistry Soils Earth & Environmental Science Intro to Geology & other introductory courses as needed
- Participate in a University-wide initiative such as Honors or First Year Experience Program by developing at least one new STEM course offering
- Develop an undergraduate-focused, community-based, research program in an environmentally-related field such as low temperature geochemistry, environmental geology, or soils
- Fund students and research with external funding whenever possible
- Fulfill University and Community Service responsibilities through participation on committees, curriculum development, and special projects.
Education, Experience, and Special Skills Required:
- Ph.D. in Geoscience, Environmental Science, or related discipline
- Demonstrated desire and ability to incorporate students into research initiatives
- Demonstrated track record in securing significant external funding for research projects and/or service learning opportunities
- Demonstrated capacity and willingness to work with, and build upon, new ICPMS and/or XRD instrumentation
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver pedagogically sound, activity- or inquiry-based curricula that augment ongoing recruiting efforts to grow our Department and NJCU’s STEM student community
- Ability and desire to work with a culturally diverse community of faculty, students, and staff
