Anti-Censorship Policy
of the
M. Jerry Weiss Center
for Children’s and Young Adult Literature
As Dr. Weiss is an avid advocate against censorship, the M. Jerry Weiss Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature shall make available any and all materials provided by the publishing companies for review by children, teachers, faculty/staff of NJCU, or local community members. As such, the Advisory Board shall act in accordance with the following principles of anti-censorship:
-
At no time shall any member or affiliate of the Advisory Board remove material sent by publishers and/or donated to the Center on Dr. Weiss’s behalf which he/she/they may find to be “inappropriate,” “questionable,” “objectionable,” or “obscene.”
-
The Advisory Board shall ask visitors to the Center to write reviews of books in which their opinions shall be documented. In expressing their opinions, individuals are asked to consider both audience and pedagogy. Parties are entitled to express negative opinions about the book, and the review shall be posted with all other reviews. All reviews, both positive and negative, shall be documented and posted on the Center’s website.
-
Any book receiving a negative review by a student, teacher, faculty/staff member of NJCU, or community member shall be processed in the same way as all reviewed books
