About Jacqueline Woodson
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Jacqueline Woodson lived on and off in Greenville, South Carolina, until she was seven and then settled in Brooklyn, New York, where she still resides. In 1985 Woodson graduated from college with a B.A. in English.
She worked as a drama therapist with runaway and homeless children in New York City in 1988 and 1989. A writing fellowship in 1990-1991 took her to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She has taught in the M.F.A. program at Goddard College and been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Since 1996, she has spent part of each summer at writing camp for underprivileged young people fourteen and older sponsored by the National Book Foundation.
Woodson’s work has been widely recognized for its excellence. She has received the Kenyon Review Award for Literary Excellence in Fiction. Her book,
I Hadn’t Meant to Tell You This, was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, an ALA Notable Children’s Book, a Coretta Scott King Honor Book, and a Jane Addams Peace Award Honor Book
