What is Project Mentor?
An academic support services program for current New Jersey City University undergraduate students with learning disabilities.

What types of services are offered?
Academic advisement, mentoring, professional tutorials, assistive technology, learning strategy workshops, and advocacy are among the services available to students. Reasonable accommodations are made by the Director on an individual basis.

Do you need to have a documented or diagnosed disability to qualify for services?
Yes. A student must submit recent documentation, within the last five years, of their disability.

How do I apply to Project Mentor?
To apply to Project Mentor, an eligible student must submit a Project Mentor application. In addition to your application, submit a copy of your NJCU acceptance letter and two copies of the following: Educational evaluation, most recent IEP, High School Transcript, SAT scores, and two (2) recommendations.

What are reasonable accommodations?
Reasonable accommodations are extended time for testing, testing in an alternate location, use of computer with spell-check, Books on CD, as well as assistive technology.  Specific accommodations must be reviewed on an individual basis based on documentation.

Can I apply after my first-year at NJCU, if I have a documented disability?
Yes. A current student with a documented disability may apply for services at anytime during their enrollment with NJCU.

If I am an OSS or Project Mentor student, do all of my professors have to know?
No. Your status as an OSS/Project Mentor student is confidential. If you are seeking accommodations in the classroom, your accommodation request form is self-disclosure to your professors, to be done at your discretion.

Will my specific disability be disclosed when I submit my accommodations to my professors?
No. The accommodation request form only indicates that you have a documented disability and require accommodations to participate successfully in their class.

How much does Project Mentor cost?
There is no fee to participate in the Project Mentor program. However, students must be enrolled as an NJCU undergraduate. Contact the Finanical Aid office with tuition and financial aid concerns and/or questions.

Is the summer orientation program mandatory?
The summer orientation program is mandatory in order for students to take advantage of the full array of services available through Project Mentor. We strongly encourage first-year students to participate. Transfer students are also welcome. Transition to a four-year college environment requires a great deal of preparation for students with learning disabilities.
Therefore, it is beneficial to your success at NJCU to enroll in the summer orientation program prior to your first semester. Students who opt not to participate in the summer program may still receive reasonable accommodations through the OSS supported by recent documentation.

How do I qualify for a diagnostic evaluation?
An applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at a New Jersey university or college. Students may come from both community colleges and traditional four-year universities. NJCU students may qualify and should contact the Program Coordinator for more information.

How much does a diagnostic assessment cost?
The cost of a diagnostic assessment for non-NJCU students is $125.00. A check or money order can be made out to New Jersey City University. The fee must be sent with application and accompanying documents. Project Mentor serves Hudson and Essex county universities and colleges.

When will I receive my results?
Reports will be received by our offices at least two (2) weeks after the completion of the evaluation. They can be mailed or given directly to student at a consultation appointment.

Where do I get a diagnostic assessment application?
From your disability support service professional at your college or university. If the professional does not have the application, one can be downloaded from our diagnostic assessment page.
