  Mission Statement

Building on its diverse urban location, the mission of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at New Jersey City University is to teach theoretical and applied knowledge that focus on gender in relation to other social dynamics such as race, class and sexuality. Through an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum students will use gender and feminist analysis to understand the construction of individual identities and social systems within local and global contexts.

What is Women's and Gender Studies?

In 2004, Women's and Gender Studies at New Jersey City University marked its 30th year as an innovative interdisciplinary program devoted to scholarship and teaching focused on women and gender. Women's Studies was created to counter the indifference of traditional disciplines to the female experience. Courses in Women's Studies have traditionally been designed to challenge the biases of these traditional disciplines by giving attention to women's roles, women's history, and traditions of feminist thought.

Women's and Gender Studies programs across the nation underline the centrality of gender in shaping human experience, from our social roles to our innermost identities. Courses in Women's and Gender Studies explore the history of those gendered identities, giving students a sense of what it has meant to be a "man" or a "woman" in different times and places. We also explore how race, religion, nationality, ethnicity, class, culture, and sexuality combine with gender in shaping our lives, our options, and our different worlds.
