| ISTE's NECC 2008 |
|
I'll be giving two presentations at ISTE's NECC in July in San Antonio. One will focus on the work with the online high schol NJeSchool and I'll be presenting with some folks from there--Student Podcasts as the Curriculum: A New Paradigm in Language Arts
The other will be a Bring-Your-Own Laptop Session--"Become a Free and Legal Podcaster in 55 Minutes". I'll show participants the free software, hosting, and skills needed to podcast as well as review legal and ethical issues for podcasting teachers and students.

Author Christopher Shamburg presents 12 language arts units that
integrate technology into compelling, standards-based lessons. Examples
of these units include fanfiction and creative writing, teaching
Shakespeare with film and images, using blogs and social bookmarking to
facilitate independent reading projects, podcasting for a variety of
purposes, and creating and sharing digital video safely and
meaningfully. Easily understood by the beginner but full of challenging
ideas for the technology-savvy, these exciting lesson plans will appeal
to any teacher who has a curiosity about new methods and a belief that
technology can reshape and re-energize the high school English Language
Arts classroom.

Here are my handouts for iBard--using audio and performance to work with soliloquies. I'll be presenting with several others in a demonstration called There's Magic in the Web.
Here's the beginning of my activity's description.
When many students turn the page of a Shakespeare play and come to a soliloquy, they hit the invisible wall of reading—a frustratingly full page of uninterrupted text in dense and unfamiliar language, usually during an already challenging reading process.
Understanding the soliloquies can be a turnkey experience for students in the comprehension of plot, character, and Shakespeare’s language.
This activity uses audio technology to build on performance-based approaches to teach the soliloquies.
Students begin by slowing down the language and exploring its meaning and nuance through selected dramatic and choral reading techniques.
Many movies and some live performances enhance the dramatic effects of a soliloquy or speech with a voiceover or a disembodied voice.
These spoken interpretations are further enhanced with music, sound effects, and audio techniques such as reverberation and echo.

Hamlet and Polanski’s
Macbeth offer examples of this technique...

DIGITAL SHAKESPEARE: THERE'S MAGIC IN THE WEB
There are exciting ways to use technology to teach Shakespeare
that go beyond playing the audio or video version of the play or
sending students to the Web to do a scavenger hunt. From the research
done at the Folger Shakespeare
Library's summer institutes, past participants will demonstrate some of
these ways, including using audio editing to understand a soliloquy,
illuminating and explicating texts with PowerPoint animation, and
integrating standards and performance into an on-line course.

Learn to create engaging digital media projects with resources and
learn about copyright restrictions. Learn the technologies to
remix digital material, the pedagogies to make this a meaningful language
arts experience, and ways that students can publish and distribute
original remixes on the Web legally and ethically.

| PowerPoint Guidelines Activity (pdf) Shoot PowerPoint with its own bullets in this activity based on the principles of reflective practice. As a teacher and a public speaker I have seen (and done) very boring PowerPoints. This activity helps potential presenters reflect on the medium and the audience. It's a short but powerful activity that facilitates the judicious use of presentation technologies. I would recommend doing this for yourself or with students before a presentation. It is part of an extremely successful workshop "Conquering the Plateaus of Microsoft Office." |
