Fraternities and Sororities have been a part of campus life at New Jersey City University for much of its history. Today, as since its inception, the Greek System is dedicated to the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service to the community. The NJCU Greek System seeks to assist the educational and personal development of its members. Academic excellence, leadership development, community service, athletics, social activities and involvement in campus life are important aspects of Greek Life. Fraternities and Sororities at New Jersey City University are defined as selective, self-perpetuating Greek-lettered organizations that have philosophies and objectives that are in agreement with those of the University.

Greek Organizations provide a milieu that supports intellectual achievement, awareness of social responsibility, personal development and a respect for human diversity. Fraternities and Sororities can offer a rich and rewarding experience for those who choose to affiliate. Through the goal statement, the men and women in these organizations reaffirm that the purpose of Greek Life at New Jersey City University is to support, maintain and encourage unity.

You have the opportunity to attend various interests meetings presented by Greek-letter organizations at NJCU. These interest meetings are designed to help familiarize you with the organizations’ principles, history and goals. The Greek organizations range in categories from ethnicly-based to Multicultural and from Social to Community Service fraternities and sororities. It’s your choice!

Initial Membership Requirements
Once you choose an organization, all interested individuals must meet the following institutional criteria in order to pledge for a sorority or fraternity:  
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3
  • Must have earned 12 New Jersey City University Credits 
  • Must have two letters of recommendations from an NJCU faculty or staff member
  • Must attend a pledge workshop
 
HAZING NEW JERSEY STATE LAW
New Jersey Statutes:
 
2C: 40-3 Hazing
A person is guilty of hazing, a disorderly person offense, if, in connection with initiation of applicants to or members of a student or fraternal organization, he/she knowingly or recklessly organizes, promotes, facilitates, or engages in any conduct, other than competitive athletic events, which places or may place another person in danger of bodily injury. A person is guilty of aggravated hazing, a crime of the fourth degree, if he/she commits an act prohibited in subsection A., which results in serious bodily injury to another person.
 
2C: 40-4 Consent
Notwithstanding any other provision of Title 2C of the New Jersey Statutes to the contrary, consent shall not be available as a defense to a prosecution under this act.
 
2C: 40-5 Prosecution
Conduct constituting an offense under this Act may, at the discretion of the prosecuting attorney, be prosecuted under any other applicable provision of Title 2C of the New Jersey State Statutes; and other behaviors or activities in addition to those prohibited under N.J.S.A. 2C:40 et seq. defined as hazing by a college or university with respect to its students.
 
Greek Life Organizations at New Jersey City University do not discriminate against a person based on race, color, creed, gender, sexuality, religion, disability or student status (resident, commuter, transfer, full-time, part-time, etc.).
