What is Stepping?

Stepping is a unique dance tradition created by African American college students. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word. The tradition grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s. Stepping comes from a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group.

Though stepping is traditionally aligned with college fraternities, the art form is universal and highly appealing to young people. Today, stepping can be found in high, middle and elementary schools across the US as well as in churches and community-based organizations. The form is also spreading its wings to new venues and participants, such as Latino and Asian American Greek-letter organizations.

NJCU HOMECOMING STEPSHOW
New Jersey City University placed its stamp on the New Jersey Stepshow scene in October 2003 when the inaugural Northeast Invitational Step-Off took to the stage of the Margaret Williams Theater.  The Step commpetition has grown in stature and popularity since then, now evolving into an integral part of the university's week-long homecoming festivities.  Greek Step teams from all over New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Utah, and even as far as Canada have performed in what is now known as the NJCU Homecoming Step Showdown.
The 2007 Homecoming show will include a performance by world reknown,
performance group known simply as STEP AFRIKA.  Based in Washington, DC, the company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS & NPR as well as numerous books, documentaries and articles that seek to explore the tradition of stepping.
Greek organizations interested in competing in the upcoming Homecoming Step-Showdown must complete and submit the stepshow registration packet no later than January 1,2007.
