Activities
The Office of Campus Life and the Student Government Organization coordinate many student activities. Your involvement in student activities is essential in making New Jersey City University’s campus life a valuable one. Being involved in student activities can be one of the best decisions of your life. We encourage you to participate in out-of classroom activities, become involved and learn from those experiences. It will allow you to meet new friends, and learn valuable skills that will help you beyond college.

How do I get involved?
There are many ways to get involved at New Jersey City University. Several offices and organizations offer ways to connect students with opportunities that interest them.
The Campus Life staff challenges and encourages you to get involved. Some of our activities include:
NJCU Project Leadership
Sponsored by the Student Government Organization, NJCU Project Leadership is a one-day leadership conference held on-campus. This event is scheduled during the winter break to help remind students about their role as student leaders and prepare them for the programs, activities, challenges and opportunities that may arise during the Spring semester. NJCU project leadership is open to all university student leaders including Athletes, Resident Assistants, SGO club and organization members, Emerging Leaders, etc.
Week of Welcome (WOW)
WOW stands for Week of Welcome. This is a four day celebration designed to welcome students to the beginning of the Fall semester. Educational and social events are planed throughout the week which culminates in Campus/University Day. During the Week of Welcome, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to show their pride for NJCU and its Gothic spirit.
Multicultural Week
Held in November is a week-long celebration of various cultures at NJCU. Each cultural organization hosts a program which highlights their culture and traditions.
Homecoming
Homecoming is a Campus-wide celebration of NJCU’s rich history and tradition. Held in the month of January, all activities culminate with a Men and Women’s Alumni Basketball games and our Men and Women’s Varsity Basketball games. The celebration has grown to include faculty events including lectures and art exhibits. The highlight has been the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction and the Greek Life Step Show.
Pool Soiree
Each Fall and Spring, we host a Pool Soiree for students to relax and take a dip in the pool. Lifeguards staff the pool and hold swimming competitions. A local DJ provides the backdrop featuring the latest in Hip-Hop, R& B and Salsa music.
Center for Community Service and Volunteerism
The Center for Community and Volunteerism (CCSV) aims to create and foster an ethic of lifelong service within the NJCU community by encouraging students to participate in campus, city, county, state, national, and international outreach efforts.
Participants through the CCSV engage in meaningful service projects and have the opportunity to make a positive impact in communities that have limited means to care for themselves within Jersey City, the Greater Hudson County area and other locations, throughout the United States and the world. The program is available to NJCU undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and staff. The goals for all participants engaged in the NJCU Service Program are to develop An increased sense of civic responsibility and academic self-confidence; Achieve higher grades; Enhance leadership ability; Develop critical thinking skills; To deepen their understanding of national and community problems. By combining formal study with service to the community, students find that their learning takes on greater depth and meaning. College Leadership New Jersey (CLNJ)
College Leadership New Jersey is a collaborative effort of the bachelor’s degree granting colleges and universities in New Jersey. It seeks, honors, challenges, and develops college students who have demonstrated the potential to provide the leadership needed on their campuses and in their communities to address the problems and prospects of New Jersey. The program includes a seven-day residential component and a 30-hour community service requirement to be completed the following year. Participants will be selected based on leadership potential, community/campus interest or involvement in organizational activities, and clarity, creativity, and quality in response to application questions. Academic records and community or campus awards are considered but are not the determining factors for program acceptance.

Student Government
The Student Government Organization is the official body of clubs, organizations and student representation at New Jersey City University. It consists of a six-member Executive Board and a student council elected to represent the student body on issues that affect them on campus and throughout the state of New Jersey. Student Clubs and Organizations –
The Student Government Organization recognizes a variety of clubs and organizations which make up the Student Council. These clubs and organizations include class officers, cultural/ethnic groups and religious organizations. Membership is open to all students at New Jersey City University. Through application to SGO, you can start a club that matches your interest.
The NJCU Greek Life system consists of fraternities and sororities dedicated to the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service to the community. Fraternities and Sororities are defined as selective, self-perpetuating Greek Lettered organizations that have philosophies and objectives that are in agreement with those of the university. Gothic Times
The Gothic Times is the official student newspaper of New Jersey City University. It provides a record of University events and reflects student feelings on issues of interest to the University community. Its production requires a variety of talents and all interested students may participate.
Tower Yearbook
The Tower Yearbook is an annual record of student life at New Jersey City University. Students work on the design and production of the yearbook. All interested students may join the yearbook staff.
WGKR Radio Station
WGKR Radio Station is the voice of New Jersey City University. The radio station provides a hands-on environment for aspiring DJ’s or for students with an interest in broadcasting.
Emerging Leaders
Institute
(ELI)
The Emerging Leaders Institute is a freshman retention initiative designed to strengthen the leadership skills of first-year students at New Jersey City University. Students must apply and are accepted based on interests and previous leadership experiences. ELI offers a full academic year of workshops, outings, leadership opportunities and more that help to prepare first-year student to become successful in future leadership roles on campus. These roles may include and are not limited to: SGO Officers, Student Representatives on University Committees, Student Members of the Board of Trustees, Interns, etc.
The Athletics department hosts a highly competitive and varied intramural sports program that provides an opportunity for both team and individual participation. Intramural activities include:

Co-curricular Transcript
The Co-curricular Transcript is an official listing of a student’s involvement in various student activities while attending New Jersey City University. Information on the co-curricular transcript will include but not be limited to leadership positions, presentations and attendance at conferences, and community service activities. Any student interested in creating a co-curricular transcript must download and complete the Co-curricular transcript form and return it to Renata Moreira in the Office of Campus Life.
