Academics

Studying Abroad offers many growth and enriching opportunities. One of them is the chance to experience the disparity between the education methods of different educational systems and look for ways in which we can improve ours.

The British approach to teaching is focused on independent learning and interdependent study on the part of the student(s). Conversely, here in the U.S professors hand out assignments and work must be submitted continually throughout the semester. The U.K differs by focusing on the process of learning with a final evaluation at the end of the semester. This can be both good and bad for U.S students.

Pros: As a student you will have ample time to develop, implement and analyze research and projects. Simultaneously you will be able to allocate your time as you see fit.

Cons: Some American students may not be used to not having regular tests and/or evaluations for an entire semester. This may cause some stress since some students need to have a feel for where they stand academically throughout a given semester. Consequently, an "end evaluation," project or test which determines the class grade can be daunting to some students. Not all classes are like this but in my experience in Kingston, most were.

Transfer of Credits

Some students shy away from studying abroad because they are concerned that they will miss a semester or a year in their home school and delay their graduation time. The good news is you can earn credits towards your degree while studying abroad.

First things first: Ensure the classes you select to take abroad are classes that will fulfill your major requirements at home. When you have decided on what classes to take you will have a meeting with the school's Study Abroad Coordinator and you will both review the process. You will also be required to meet with a faculty advisor for final review. The ultimate goal is to get some assurances that the courses you take abroad will count towards your degree.

In the months after you have completed your semester abroad the New Jersey State Consortium for International Students (NJSCIS) will mail NJCU your study abroad transcripts. After they are received by the International Office they will be sent out to the Registrar's Office where they will be included in your NJCU transcripts. The grade will show up as a "P" presuming you have passed your courses. Your overseas transcript will be used for your final NJCU graduation clearance or if you transfer to another school.
