I advise students who are seeking secondary English education certification - meaning students who wish to teach English in middle or high school. Students with questions should email me (afisch@njcu.edu). I usually respond more quickly to emails than to phone messages.
NEW (for all students NEW to the program)
If you have not yet seen Dr. Hall for advisement, please call the department secretary, Ms. Ricourt, 201-200-3421, and schedule an appointment with Dr. Hall. There is no rush, but please make sure you arrange an appointment before the end of the semester. Bring a copy of your general studies/education advisement sheet with you to that meeting. This meeting will serve as an intake interview with Dr. Hall, which is a requirement for formal admission into the program.
For students who need general studies courses, there are several online and face-to-face area courses being offered over the winter intersession. Of particular note are SOCI 114 and INTD 149 for certification students.
Advisement forms:
Advisement for Secondary English Education Certification Students –Spring 2010 The spring 2010 Master Course Lists (MCL) will be available shortly on-line. Please email me your gothic id and I will immediately lift your hold so that you can go ahead (depending on your registration appointment, based on your status as a sophomore, junior, etc. at NJCU) and register for the courses you think you would like to take. You can always make changes to that schedule after we meet. Also, if you receive an error message at any point during registration with a reference to prerequisites, that means I may need to register you. Email me your gothic id and the four digit code for the course you are trying to add, and I will add it for you. This is particularly important for transfer students. For up-to-date advisement information, please check my website: http://web.njcu.edu/sites/faculty/afisch/Content/office_hoursadvisement.asp. I update it each week with office hours and other advisement information. Email me to make an advisement appointment. If my office hours don’t seem convenient, email me a time that would work for you, and I will see what I can work out. You should also feel free to see Prof. Englert for advisement (henglert@njcu.edu). Please come prepared to your advisement appointment with copies of your track sheets, any previous long-term projection for courses/graduation that we may have discussed, and your tentative plan for the summer and fall. If you have not already taken the COE Writing Assessment, sign up now at http://web.njcu.edu/programs/writingassessment/Content/default.asp. If you have taken the assessment but not passed or are concerned that you might not pass, you must sign up for the recommended remediation, LTED 305. Remember that for EDU 331 Field Experience II (Phase 2—Junior Field Practicum) and EDU 480 Internship (Phase 4—Student Teaching) you must sign up one year in advance. I have the paperwork that you need to fill out and submit to the office of CTPP. In the upcoming advisement and registration period, we will be doing paperwork for students taking those courses in fall 2010. EDU 331 requires one full school-day a week for the entire semester in a language arts classroom. You may receive two placements—one-half of the semester in a middle school and one-half of the semester in a high school. You must have passed EDU 330 (or be enrolled concurrently), have passed the writing assessment, and have a 2.75 GPA. CTPP will register you if you have fulfilled all the requirements and your paperwork is in order. EDU 480 is your student-teaching semester which requires you to gradually take over most of the responsibilities of a full-time teacher with your own classes for a full school day, five days a week, for the entire semester. You must have completed all EDU prerequisites, received a NJ passing score on the English Content Praxis Exam (10041) [sign up at www.ets.org], and have a 2.75 GPA. You must finish all of your English courses before student teaching. The one-credit English Praxis Review course, English 501, is not currently being offered, but I do have some review materials that I am happy to share with you. For both the Writing Assessment and the Praxis, please notify me of the results. For the spring 2010 semester, here is registration information: Phase II (you must have completed all the courses in phase I with a B- or above in order to be eligible for phase II)
