Interview for ISTE in Seconld LIfe

DIY Media: Creating, Sharing, and Learning with New Technologies.
I've got a chapter "DIY Podcasting in Education" in DIY Media: Creating, Sharing, and Learning with new Technologies (Knobel, Ed., 2010, Peter Lang Publishing).   It was a pleasure to work on the chapter, especially because it emphasized the connection of digital culture to the history of the DIY Ethic ...something that I had tacitly acknowledged, but not fully realized or articulated.    I got a bigger bang for my buck working on this than I had anticipated.

Presenting Shakespeare and Remix at NJEDge
This is one of my favorite conferences--the innovative work of educators in higher ed (in half hour sessions).  March 12, 2010

My presentation is

Shakespeare and Remix Katherine Mazzetti, Axia College, University of Phoenix Christopher Shamburg, New Jersey City University This presentation demonstrates a variety of ways to teach Shakespeare with technology. At the heart of these methods is making students creators of content in authentic ways. Students record, edit, and remix using a variety of materials. People in English, communication, cultural studies will be interested in how contemporary remix practices correlate with practices of Shakespeare' play productions, during his time and through history. A general audience will be interested in how principles of remix are not only used today, but how they are placed in historical, cultural, and cognitive perspectives....

New Book is Out
Student-Powered Podcasting: Teaching for 21st Century Literacy  is out.

Like many educators, you may already take advantage of podcasts in your classroom, but have you ever had your students do the creating? It's easy, and you'll be surprised what students learn from this technology. Podcasting is a powerful tool for teaching 21st-century literacy-the literacy of social processes. Not only will students learn technology skills that they can use throughout their lives, but podcasting also connects and applies students' learning to the world around them. Understanding the audience requires students to empathize with others, and developing and posting relevant, engaging podcasts helps students become active, engaged members of society.

Examples of these units include fanfiction and creative writing, teaching Shakespeare with film and images, using blogs and social bookmarking to facilitate independent reading projects, podcasting for a variety of purposes, and creating and sharing digital video safely and meaningfully. Easily understood by the beginner but full of challenging ideas for the technology-savvy, these exciting lesson plans will appeal to any teacher who has a curiosity about new methods and a belief that technology can reshape and re-energize the high school English Language Arts classroom.

NCTE Nashville 2006
Here are my handouts for iBard--using audio and performance to work with soliloquies.  I'll be presenting with several others in a demonstration called There's Magic in the Web.

Here's the beginning of my activity's description.

When many students turn the page of a Shakespeare play and come to a soliloquy, they hit the invisible wall of reading—a frustratingly full page of uninterrupted text in dense and unfamiliar language, usually during an already challenging reading process.   Understanding the soliloquies can be a turnkey experience for students in the comprehension of plot, character, and Shakespeare’s language.

This activity uses audio technology to build on performance-based approaches to teach the soliloquies.   Students begin by slowing down the language and exploring its meaning and nuance through selected dramatic and choral reading techniques.   Many movies and some live performances enhance the dramatic effects of a soliloquy or speech with a voiceover or a disembodied voice.   These spoken interpretations are further enhanced with music, sound effects, and audio techniques such as reverberation and echo.   Film productions of Branaugh’s Hamlet and Polanski’s Macbeth offer examples of this technique...

DIGITAL SHAKESPEARE: THERE'S MAGIC IN THE WEB

There are exciting ways to use technology to teach Shakespeare that go beyond playing the audio or video version of the play or sending students to the Web to do a scavenger hunt. From the research done at the Folger Shakespeare Library's summer institutes, past participants will demonstrate some of these ways, including using audio editing to understand a soliloquy, illuminating and explicating texts with PowerPoint animation, and integrating standards and performance into an on-line course.

Description and Handouts

Performance and Digital Video
Performance and Digital Video @PBS's In Search of Shakespeare* This is a case study of using digital video for teaching Shakespeare in a performance-based approach.  It is a sample of the work that I have been doing as a consultant for the Folger Shakespeare Library's Teaching Shakespeare Program

Overview of Copyright in Education
Overview of Copyright in Education (pdf) This is an introduction to copyright.  A good primer for students and teachers.  I use variations of this presentation in several of my courses and workshops.  Students and participants have successful modified it and used it with their classes as well.

Introduction to MovieMaker
Introduction to Windows Moviemaker (pdf) This is a quick start for using Movie Maker.  It introduces the basic features and procedures.

Audio Editing Using AUDACITY Software
Audio Editing Tutorial Using Audacity Software (pdf) This is a tutorial that would take about 90 minutes to do.  It gives the basics to using the freeware audio editing program Audacity with an introductory activity.  This is from a workshop "Rich Media in the K-12 Curriculum"

PowerPoint Guidelines Activity
PowerPoint Guidelines Activity (pdf) Shoot PowerPoint with its own bullets in this activity based on the principles of reflective practice.  As a teacher and a public speaker I have seen (and done) very boring PowerPoints.  This activity helps potential presenters reflect on the medium and the audience.  It's a short but powerful activity that facilitates the judicious use of presentation technologies.  I would recommend doing this for yourself or with students before a presentation. It is part of an extremely successful workshop "Conquering the Plateaus of Microsoft Office."

Web 2.0 Introduction
Web 2.0 Introduction (Web page).  Though I was skeptical of the term at first, the Web is changing to a more participatory, social, open environment with easier ways to share and access quality content.  This short overview describes some of the terms and popular applications.
