Overview of Using Flickr

About Flickr (www.flickr.com).   Online photo services like Shutterfly, Ofoto, and Snapfish (or subsidiaries like Yahoo Photos and CVS Pictures) focus on three things—uploading your digital pictures, sharing them with friends and family, and making prints.

Flickr does all of these things, as a beginning.   Flickr is a global community of picture takers—sharing, learning, and communicating.

Some of the exciting features are:

  • Search and browse millions of quality pictures from around the world
  • Create contacts of other members to quickly view and discuss images
  • Create or join groups on topics such as black and white images, historical places, or the innovative use of angles
  • Comment on and tag images so they are reviewed and searchable by your criteria
  • Download large, high quality images for print or Web
  • Quickly search and use thousands of images that are available to use with permissions of the owners

We will go over these features in this workshop.   First, a caveat--this is a workshop focusing on a teacher’s own productivity skills.   There is some objectionable and adult material on Flickr.   Flickr has rules to restrict these images and they are not features or displayed, but they can be found by a search. You should use this service cautiously with students under the age of 18.
