RSS Stands for Real Simple Syndication.
This the connective tissue of many applications know as social software or the Web 2.0.
It is a simple but powerful technology.
It is a technology that works with a Web site, blog, podcast, or news service that will automatically keep you informed of new content.
You can use also use RSS with customized Web searches that will automatically keep you updated on news for a particular subject (like Hurricanes, Special Education or the New York Yankees). News organizations such as
the New York Times, NPR, and CNN provide rss feeds for specific topics such as international news, the Pentagon, and arts and entertainment.
A Web site, podcaster, news organization, or blogger will have an rss file accompanying their content.
This file will create an rss feed.
It is a small file that can be created manually or generated automatically.
A consumer will subscribe to this feed through a feed aggregator (also known as feed catcher).
There are some free and simple feed aggregators on the Web--Bloglines (www.bloglines.com), Feedster (www.feedster.com), RSS-Feed.org (www.rss-feed.org) are three popular one. I would recommend Bloglines to get you hooked.
