Creative Writing
Course Description & Student Responsibilities

I want you to feel that Creative Writing is utterly unlike your other academic work. I hope that you will feel free and playful in this course. This is a chance to express yourself in your own language, in your own way. The more pleasure you take in your work, the more successful your writing is likely to be.
Here are some important things to keep in mind:

1) You will be asked to submit weekly assignments in Fiction and Poetry. We will discuss your writing in class and I will put written comments on your submissions, but you will not receive a grade of any kind until the end of the semester.

2) You will be expected to bring enough photocopies of your work to distribute to all of your classmates. Please, no excuses about broken computers, empty printing cartridges, or long lines at the school printer. Plan ahead! It's your responsibility to bring your writing to class. If you fail to do this, it will count as a 1/2 absence for that class day.

3) More than 5 hours of absence is considered excessive and it will lead to a reduction of your final grade. If our class meets just once a week for 3 hours, this means that 2 full absences puts you over the course limit.

4) Anyone arriving over 1/2 hour late for class will be marked for one lost hour of class attendance.

5) If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get your assignment from either a classmate or from me. If you fail to bring in assigned work the week following an absence, you will be penalized.

6) Type all work. Double space. No crazy fonts. Go easy on italics.

7) Proofread your writing and give careful attention to spelling, grammar, and diction.

8) Class discussion in which students comment on one another's writing is an essential part of the course. All of you are expected to speak up in class.  When I consider your final grade, I will certainly reward those of you who offer insightful and constructive comments to your classmates.

9) Save all your written work. At the end of the semester, you will resubmit your writing and revisions to me in a Portfolio. I will base your final grade on the quality of your finished work.
