Our Purpose & Syllabus

English 101 is designed to help you improve your writing for college courses.   Class work will help you review basic writing skills and will offer you useful guidelines on how to write effective essays.   We will also spend a good deal of time discussing assigned reading in detail.   Our reading will consist of short essays grouped around several related areas, all of which fall under the general topic of “Forces that shape our lives and our perception of ourselves.”   Though I may change the reading assignments once I become better acquainted with your interests and needs, here is my working syllabus:

1) Family

“Illusion of happiness” essay                                  photocopied handout

            Soto, “Looking for Work”                                         26-31

Responsibilities & Expectations :

1.   At the beginning of each week, you should have already completed that week's assigned reading.   My classes are taught as “interruptible” lectures.   Speak up!   Ask questions.   Feel free to comment on what I’ve said, or what your classmates say, or what the texts themselves seem to be saying.

2.   I expect you to attend all classes.    If you miss more than 6 hours of class, it will lead to a reduction of your final grade

3.   If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get assignments from either me or one of your classmates .   Missing a class one day is no excuse for failing to hand in an assigned essay when it is due .

4.     Your Essays

·         All work should be submitted on time.   LATE WORK WILL LOSE CREDIT !   No email submissions.

·         I expect you to take pride in your written work. Proofread your essay (Spell Check & Grammar Check are never good enough) and give attention to spelling, grammar, and diction.   Good ideas and weak writing are an awkward combination.

·         Type your essays.   Double space, no crazy fonts.

·         Your insights should be supported by reference to specific passages from the texts in question.    Unsupported assertions and generalizations will not earn you a good grade.

·         Sometimes it is a good idea to seek extra help at the Open Writing Lab in K-115.

·         I'll read your essays carefully and promptly. In some cases I may ask you to Rewrite your paper.   When you rewrite an essay, your grade will be the average of the grades you receive on each version.

·         Others of you may read through my comments and choose to rewrite your paper just because you want to improve your essay (or your grade).    It is English Department policy that students have the option of rewriting any essay they submit.
