What are the degree programs offered in the music department at NJCU?
NJCU offers Bachelor of Music in Performance (classical & jazz), Bachelor of Arts (music education, music without specialization, and music business), Master of Music in Performance (classical, jazz, and multiple woodwinds), and Master of Arts (music education) degree programs certified by NASM and The Middle States Association.

How is one admitted to the music department?
Admission to the music department is dependent on University acceptance of a student’s academic credentials and the music department’s acceptance based upon a live audition.

Can a music major take music courses outside of their degree requirements?
Music major can take courses in any music track (i.e. a music education major can take jazz courses; a classical performance major can also take courses in music business, etc.) as long as they possess the skills that will enable them to successfully complete the course requirements

What is the difference in the credit load between undergraduate music major degree programs?
Bachelor of Music students have 80 credits in music and 48 in required liberal arts courses; Bachelor of Arts students have 51 credits in music, 66 credits in liberal arts and 11 additional elective credits.

How many music majors are there?
There are roughly 100 undergraduate music majors and 40 graduate majors for the Fall 2007 semester. All are enrolled in several performing groups; many perform in as many as three or four ensembles each semester

What housing facilities are available?
Most music majors are commuters. There are also dormitory housing facilities available for those who want to live on campus, including Vodra Hall located directly across from the music building.

How many applied lessons does a music major receive each semester?
Undergraduate and graduate students receive 14 individual lessons each semester from faculty drawn from New York’s finest active performers. Students also receive free piano coachings every semester from faculty pianists, who also accompany them at seminar, jury and recital performances.

Are there any plans for new facilities?
In recent years there have been a number of new facilities created on campus including a new science building, a newly renovated library, a new sports & leisure complex, a new media building, a new fine arts building, and a newly renovated student union building which will be completed during Fall 2007. A new music facility is also anticipated by Fall 2010.
