The NJCU Jazz Studies program has gained national recognition over the past eighteen years under the direction of Dr. Edward Joffe. A faculty of world renowned jazz artists work with the students and guest artists present master classes and performances with the student ensembles each semester. Recent visitors to NJCU have included Charles McPherson, Joe Lovano, Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, Mike Longo, Jimmy Heath, Marvin Stamm, Maria Schneider, Phil Woods, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Kevin Mahogany, Billy Hart and Kenny Werner. The student ensembles perform at jazz clubs throughout the metropolitan region as well as on-campus. Recent performance venues have included Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Trumpets, Birdland, The Blue Note and on WBGO-FM. The NJCU jazz ensembles recently released their 7th CD, entitled Live At Dizzy's with jazz legends Charles McPherson and Randy Brecker. The Jazz Studies area offers Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Jazz Performance degrees.
 
 
 



Ensemble Opportunities:

The Jazz Studies program offers students a chance to develop their improvisational, compositional, and ensemble skills through intensive classroom work and performance opportunities. A faculty of world-class New York area jazz and recording artists work with the students in private lessons and ensembles such as The NJCU Jazz Ensemble, The Lab Band, The Studio Orchestra, The Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Jazz Guitar Ensemble, The Brazilian Ensemble, The Afro-Cuban Ensemble, and Combos. These groups perform regularly in jazz clubs throughout New Jersey (Trumpet’s, Cecil’s) and New York (Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, The Blue Note), in local schools, at jazz festivals, as well as on campus.

2011/2012 HONORS FOR STUDENTS/ENSEMBLES/FACULTY

Trumpeter   Marcell Bellinger (MM in Jazz Performance) was awarded the New Jersey Jazz Society scholarship for his outstanding performing ability. He will appear in concert at the NJJS Pee Wee Russell Memorial Stomp on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. The concert starts at 12noon.

Trombonist Danny Hall (MM in Jazz Performance), Saxophonist John Di Santo ( MM in Multiple Woodwind Performance), and trumpeter Marcel Bellinger (MM in Jazz Performance) performed with the NJ Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble at the NJMEA Conference on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, NJ.

The NJCU Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Jazz Vespers in Newark, NJ on Saturday, April 7, 2012 starting at 6pm. They will be performing with vocalist Roseanna Vitro and saxophonist Mark Gross.

Jazz Faculty vocal instructor Roseanna Vitro recently released her 12th solo album— The Music of Randy Newman—on the Motéma Music label. She has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category. 

Jazz Faculty drum instructor Tim Horner recently released his first solo album as a leader on the Miles High record label entitled The Places We Feel Free.

2010/2011 HONORS FOR STUDENTS/ENSEMBLES

During September 2010, the NJCU Jazz Ensemble was featured for one week at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Lincoln Center with jazz greats Charles McPherson (asx) and Randy Brecker (trpt). NJCU remains the only college/university other than The Juilliard School to be given a full week at this prestigious jazz club. The music from that week’s performances was recorded and aired on XM Sirius satellite radio during October 2010. A CD recording — A Night at Dizzy’s— has just been released and is available free of charge to prospective jazz majors.

Pianist Jason Teborek (MM in Jazz Performance) was awarded the New Jersey Jazz Society scholarship for his outstanding performing ability. He will appear in concert at the NJJS Pee Wee Russell Memorial Stomp on Sunday March 6, 2011 at Birchwood Manor in Whippany, NJ. The concert starts at 12noon.

The NJCU Jazz Ensemble appearred live on-air on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 over WBGO—FM (88.3) from 2:00-3:00pm. Michael Bourne will host this hour that will also be broadcast worldwide over the Internet. This performance is in celebration of Jazz Month—April 2011.

Pianist Jason Teborek (MM in Jazz Performance), bassist Peter McCullough (MM in Jazz Performance), alumnus tenor saxophonist Jeremy Fratti (MM in Jazz Performance) and drummer Jon DiFiore (BM in Jazz Performance) play every Sunday evening starting at 11:30pm as the house rhythm section at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in NYC. The address of the club is 2751 Broadway between 105th/106th streets.

Kristen Dziuba (BM in Jazz Performance) was awarded the first New Jersey Jazz Society vocal scholarship in honor of jazz vocalist, Bree Jackson. Ms. Dziuba will receive this award and perform on Sunday February 20, 2011 at the Shanghai Jazz restaurant in Madison, NJ with legendary pianist Norman Simmons.

Saxophonist Kris Cardella (MM in Jazz Performance), guitarist German Gonzalez (BM in Jazz Performance), and trumpeter Marcel Bellinger (MM in Jazz Performance) performed with the NJ Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble at the NJMEA Conference on Thursday, February 24, 2011.
