Music Education
The Music Education program prepares individuals to teach music in public and private schools, kindergarten through high school. With the completion of the requirements for New Jersey Certification, graduates are eligible to teach general, vocal, and instrumental music in a variety of settings. The program may also provide a foundation for musical leadership in religious and social institutions as well as lead to a career in college teaching. The Music Education Program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Admission to the Music Education Program Students are admitted to the Department of Music, Dance and Theatre based on a performance audition on a primary instrument or voice. Students must also complete placement tests in music theory and piano. This audition usually occurs prior to admittance to the university.
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education requires a minimum of 132 credits of baccalaureate study. In addition to the required music courses, students in this program must successfully complete AUR (All University Requirements) and selected Area Courses. Eligibility for teacher certification by the New Jersey Department of Education is dependent upon completion of the curriculum requirements of the certification program, a cumulative grade point average of 2.75, field experiences, senior internship (student teaching), and a passing score on the Praxis II exam (http://www.ets.org/). Completion of this major prepares one to assume the responsibilities of a public school music teacher or a private music instructor. Continued study may include a master’s degree in music education or music supervision. For courses in this degree program see: Undergraduate Degree Programs
Students who already have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and wish to obtain a provisional music-teaching certificate must be evaluated by the Music Department for competency in required areas. Additional course work must be completed in order to satisfy requirements for music education certification. All Music Education Majors are required to give at least a one-half hour recital during their 7th semester of applied study. Please see the handbook of the applied area (Piano, Voice, Guitar, Brass Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings) for specific requirements. The MENC (Music Educators National Conference): The National Association for Music Education is the world’s largest arts education association. Through its many programs activities, publications, and conferences, MENC works to promote the value of music education, foster the best possible music education programs in our nation’s schools, and advance music education as a profession.
All music education majors are required to be active members in MENC Chapter 508 during their enrollment at NJCU. Active participation includes attendance at a minimum of two music education conferences, workshops, or lectures per semester.
