The Music, Dance and Theatre department at New Jersey City University brings together internationally recognized classical and jazz performers, composers, music educators and musicologists to provide students with an exciting and valuable learning experience. Located in Jersey City, New Jersey close to public transportation, our campus is just minutes from the symphony, ballet, opera, musical theatre, chamber music and jazz club venues available in New York City.

On campus, students can perform in large ensembles including wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, studio orchestra, orchestra, choir, lab band, opera, and musical theatre. Students can also work in a large variety of chamber ensembles, jazz combos, chamber choir, jazz vocal ensemble, percussion ensemble, classical and jazz guitar ensembles, Brazilian ensemble, opera and musical theatre workshops, and other small ensemble groups designed for particular student interests.

The members of our faculty are respected performers, composers, educators and scholars who take a serious interest in their students. In addition to this highly qualified resident faculty, the Music, Dance and Theatre department employs approximately 150 outstanding performers from the New York City metropolitan area as adjunct instructors who teach private lessons, work as coaches and accompanists, and offer specialty courses. The department also hosts two chamber music series and a Great Performers Series that bring the students additional opportunities to hear a broad spectrum of musical genres and styles and to talk with the renowned musicians who perform on these concerts.

The Music, Dance and Theatre department offers undergraduate degrees in performance, music education, music without specialization, musical theatre and music business; graduate degrees are offered in music education, chamber music, opera, jazz and classical performance, and multiple woodwind performance.  Though the department does not have degree programs in theatre or dance, a wide range of courses in both theatre and dance are available each semester.
