Guitar Studies
Dr. Ana María Rosado
Coordinator of Guitar Studies
201 200-2099

Audition Requirements for the guitar program are to be discussed with the coordinator of the program and an audition date is to be determined at that time as well. This will comprise classical guitar studies and repertoire as well as scales and other aspects of technique as suitable. Studies by Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, Leo Brouwer and Heitor Villa-Lobos will be appropriate.

Undergraduate guitar students must enroll in the Guitar Ensemble every semester they are taking applied lessons. The ensemble meets at least once a week under the supervision of the instructor and is expected to rehearse independently of this session in preparation for the regular Guitar Program performances at Music Seminar and for the occasional graduating student recitals. This course is designed to provide guitar majors with chamber music experience while playing works written or arranged for guitar ensemble. It also satisfies the small chamber ensemble requirement for music majors and is required of all undergraduate students enrolled as guitar majors throughout their studies at NJCU.

Special performance opportunities are also available. The MDT sponsors Guitar Sunday at NJCU, a recital and master class by top international performers. This activity is open to all, the audience and the students at NJCU first listen to world class performers and then attend a master class for selected students. This opportunity not only enriches the education all guitar students receive at the MDT, but also enhances the chosen performer’s credentials for further study and professional performing opportunities. Most recently artists of the stature of Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Benjamin Verdery, David Leisner and René Izquierdo have participated in the series. Jerry Willard, Ricardo Iznaola, Ruben Gonzalez Avila and Carlos Barbosa –Lima have also performed and given master classes at NJCU in the past.
