(Music, Dance, Theatre) AREAS OF STUDY Brass Studies The brass performance degree programs are designed to acquaint students with a wide range of musical styles through a multitude of performing opportunities and individual studies with a faculty of top New York area professionals. Students are encouraged to perform in solo recitals, chamber ensembles, large ensembles and University productions such as operas and musicals. Each student has a weekly lesson with his/her major teacher and undergraduates are assigned a weekly coaching with a staff accompanist. Guest artists appear in recitals, concerts and master classes every semester. Recent visitors to the University have included trumpeters Claudio Roditi, Chris Gekker, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, Byron Stripling and Clark Terry; trombonists Joe Alessi, Jim Pugh, Slide Hampton and Conrad Herwig; and chamber ensembles such as the American Brass Quintet, the Heritage Brass Quintet and the Brass Arts Collective. Learn more > > > Jazz Studies This program offers students a chance to develop their improvisational, compositional and ensemble skills through intensive classroom work and performance opportunities. A faculty of world class New York area jazz and recording artists work with the students in private lessons and ensembles to prepare them for the versatile demands of today's music industry. The ensembles frequently perform at venues both on and off campus. Students studying in this area also benefit from master classes and concerts presented by guest artists who appear on campus every semester. Learn more > > > Vocal Studies Applied voice students at NJCU receive weekly private lessons and vocal coachings. They perform before their peers in seminar class and present formal juries before the voice faculty at the end of each semester. Students also enjoy a variety of special lectures and master classes, as well as opportunities to perform in choral ensembles, recitals and theatrical projects. Each year a fully-staged opera is presented during the fall semester, and a fully-staged musical is presented during the spring semester. These productions include professional sets, costumes, lighting, and a full orchestra. Learn more > > > Music Education The Music Education Program at New Jersey City University prepares individuals to teach instrumental and vocal music (K-12) in public, private and parochial schools. It may also provide a foundation for musical leadership in religious and social institutions. The Music Education Program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Learn more > > > Percussion Studies The Percussion Studio at New Jersey City University provides students with opportunities to become a complete musician. The program is well balanced in order to prepare students for successful work in the field. The course of study will allow the student to prepare for both orchestral and graduate school auditions. Standard orchestral preparation is supplemented with solo repertoire, intense technical studies, interpretation of modern music, show percussion and high level ensemble playing. Students also participate in master classes, clinics, and performances with world class professionals, including Candido Camero, "Changuito," Anthony J. Cirone, Gordon Gottleib, Chris Lamb, the late Frankie Malabe, Bobby Sanabria, Leigh Howard Stevens, Jeff Queen, She-e Wu, Glen Velez, Neil Grover. Learn more > > > Guitar Studies The Guitar Program at the New Jersey City University offers a variety of musical experiences for all the students at the undergraduate and graduate level. The program includes Applied Music, Music Seminar where all the undergraduate students convene each week to perform for each other. In addition, the undergraduate guitar students enroll in the Guitar Ensemble every semester they are taking applied lessons. The ensemble meets at least once a week under the supervision of the instructor and is expected to rehearse independently of this session in preparation for the regular Guitar Program performances at Music Seminar and for participation in various student recitals. This course is designed to provide guitar majors with chamber music experience while playing works written or arranged for guitar ensemble. Special performance opportunities are also available. The department sponsors Guitar Sunday at NJCU. An activity in which the the students and other guests listen to world class performers on the classical guitar and attend master classes. Selected students perform for and receive musical advice from distinguished professionals. Learn more > > > Piano Studies The goal of the undergraduate and graduate piano program at NJCU is to achieve and maintain high musical standards in the areas of pianistic performance. The MDT offers many opportunities for performance in a variety of capacities; these include solo appearances in music seminars and a mid-day concert series as well as ensemble concerts and collaborative piano with instrumentalists and vocalists. Piano majors also participate in large ensembles such as Symphony of Winds and Percussion, NJCU Orchestra, Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra, Chamber music, and Percussion Ensemble. Advanced piano majors have the opportunity to play concertos and other works for piano and orchestra with NJCU Orchestra and the Symphony of Winds & Percussion. Learn more > > > Music Business Studies The B.A. in Music Business prepares individuals with knowledge and appropriate skills for developing careers in the broad area of the music industry including: general management, arts management, marketing, accounting, business, law, media, and technology. Completion of this major prepares one for a career as a theater manager, orchestra manager, recording engineer, or sound engineer. Further, the goal is to develop confident individuals by providing a strong academic base for lifelong learning. Students in this degree program develop personal music skills through applied music study, harmony, ear training, keyboard, and computer music. The program is consistent with the University’s multifaceted mission which includes a strong commitment to general studies in the liberal arts degree program, as well as preparation for the world of work.
