Title of the Workshop: “ Standard Motivation: Tapping into Students and Youth Culture to Meet Academic Standards”
A common paradox facing teachers is the necessity to “teach to standards” while Simultaneously trying to promote and exciting and “culturally relevant” curriculum. Using the term “culture” in a broad context as referring not only to elements of racial and ethnic traditions, but also to youth culture in general, this workshop will provide specific examples and techniques to help teachers creatively teach students in culturally relevant ways. With a forces on multiculturalism as a means of motivating students toward exceptional academic achievement, the participants will leave the workshop better equipped to not only survive, but thrive within our standards driven schools. An underlying premise to creating culturally relevant lessons is that such curricula engage students, thus limiting the amount and degree of student behavior problems. Not only is using student’s culture pedagogically effective, it also creates a more equitable and democratic learning experience for students. Example and techniques will cover a variety of content area including both elementary and secondary English/Language arts, foreign languages, sciences, mathematics and social studies.
Title of the Workshop: “Your Second Year of Teaching: New Challenges” The presentation will focus on three main themes; remember, revise and rejuvenate. We will use practical example from NPTNJ and classroom experiences to remember what worked very well and fix what didn’t, revise lesson plans, rules and procedures, and teaching methods, and rejuvenate teacher’s minds through summer courses or individual research that will give them renewed energy and enthusiasm for the year ahead. We will also focus on the expectations that administrations will have for the second year teacher, and how to replace NPTNJ with other support groups. We will also address the needs of those teachers who taught for the whole year, but were not asked to return by their districts. The feedback I received after this presentation at the 2005,2007 and 2008 Capstone Conference was overwhelmingly positive. Teachers commented that using actual lessons and classroom materials helped them to see how they could improve on their first year’s performance. They also remarked that by reviewing their teaching methods, they saw where they could incorporate more literacy, cooperative and differentiated instruction strategies in to their classrooms. Those teachers who where not asked back were more hopeful after we reviewed interview strategies and what to include in their portfolios.

Classrooms management strategies for new teachers will be emphasized throughout the presentation. Title of the Workshop: “Teaching Fractions with Understanding” Most people are fraction-haters! Why? Because they learned about the rules for operating with fractions without understanding why the rules make sense. Converting a mixed number to an improper fraction, as well a adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, are particular obstacles for students. Elementary teachers need to prepare their students for a conceptual understanding of operations with fractions, middle school mathematics teachers must provide that conceptual understanding, and secondary mathematics teacher will remediate or encounter the problem again in the teaching of rational expressions. Mathematics teachers at all levels will benefit from examining why the rules for operating with fractions make sense and receiving strategies for teaching fraction from a more visual and intuitive framework.
