Introduction to Teaching

What are some of the benefits of NPTNJ?

While attending this program

  • You will form a cohort of first year alternate route teachers.
  • The cohort provides a valuable support system as you experience your first year of teaching and beyond.
  • The program is rigorous and will prepare candidates for the joys and challenges of teaching.
  • The program is statewide and can be taken at your local community college.

NPTNJ credit option students can earn 15-21 graduate credits from NJCU. There are several graduate degree program options at NJCU which will accept from 9-18 of the graduate credits earned through NPTNJ. That means you can enroll in a Master's Program after completing your credits for NPTNJ.

ATTENTION: ALL ALTERNATE ROUTE TEACHER CANDIDATES!

All candidates must take a 24-hour pre-service course, Introduction to Teaching, in order to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility to teach in the state of New Jersey. New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey is an approved provider of the 24-hour program. Our Introduction to Teaching 24-hour Pre-service Program is offered at many of New Jersey’s community colleges and at New Jersey City University. The purpose of Introduction to Teaching is to provide a snapshot of teaching and to offer candidates an understanding of teaching as a profession. This course is offered in various formats, both face-to face and blended. It is offered on weekdays as well as weekends.

Course content focuses on classroom management, assessment, lesson planning, literacy, technology, and finding a teaching position. In order to get an authentic look at classrooms today, one of the requirements of the course is a four hour classroom observation.
