TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULLY WORKING A JOB FAIR

YOUR GOALS:

  • To establish personal contact with relevant employers and make a solid first impression.
  • To collect business cards from a wide variety of individuals who can become part of your professional network.
  • To identify meaningful employment opportunities and gain valuable career information about those opportunities and companies.

PREPARATION:

  • Dress in formal business attire.
  • Take a good supply of resumes and business cards, notebook and pen.
  • Practice self-introduction – name, job objective and your 1 minute commercial which consists of your resume work experience, academic background and accomplishments.
  • Read theclassified section of your local newspapers

AT THE JOB FAIR:

  • Expect crowds and some waiting in line to talk to specific employers.
  • Obtain list of employers (usually at the main entrance) and map out a strategy of your priority companies to visit. .
  • Do notassume that a school or a company does not have your type of job that you are looking for based on the name of the company, thus please visit all representatives at the fair.
  • Don’t forget to talk with other job candidates who can be important network contacts.
  • Be sure to make eye contact, have a good firm handshake, and smile when talking with company representatives.
  • Do not interrupt a conversation between another candidate and a company representative.
