The following is an article from www.nj.com which covers the success rate and life changing experience the Alternate Route has been for all participants that went through the program.

“Educators at Bergen Community College expected a good turnout when they held two open houses for prospective students in their alternate route teaching program… “There were people there from all walks of life. We had everyone from the guy at the Verizon store who got laid off, to the guy who had been making $220,000 a year at one of the financial houses in the city,” said Ilene Kleinman, director of continuing education and community outreach there.”

"We must have had 150 people from the financial services industry, people who have lost jobs on Wall Street, lost jobs with big financial houses, who don't want to go through that again. They need to find something that makes sense," she said. "A lot of them think being a teacher makes sense." “About a third of new teachers entering New Jersey classrooms now come through alternate route certification, or 2,295 of 7,169 hired last year, according to the state Department of Education.”

A success story told from a NPTNJ Graduate

Hi Bob!

Hope this email finds you well. I just wanted to touch base and share with you some great news. First and foremost I just got my tenure which I was very excited about. BUT, then I learned that I was chosen 2009 Outstanding Middle/Junior High School Science Teacher of the Year by Sigma Xi the Scientific Research Society for my accomplishments these past three years at New Brunswick Middle School. I guess they like my "thinking outside the box " approach to science.
It's been an interesting journey and I still love it albeit the kids this year are tougher and more challenging to deal with than the past two years prior.

anyway, just thought it would be nice to hear that one of your graduates from the alternate route program is doing well. I'm almost finished with my Master's at NJCU as well. I have the research and thesis class left. It was a bit too much this past spring to do with my daughter finishing her first year at college and everything else I've been doing. I was in charge of a huge Bristol Myers Squibb grant for genetic disorders with my students that kept me quite busy.

Please send my best to Mr. P and everyone else still involved with the NJCU Pathways program.

All the best,
Barb Zabel
