BDI is honored with the NJBIA 2007 New Good Neighbor Award

Gina Boesch, BDI director, and Aaron Aska (center right), NJCU interim vice president for administration and finance, were congratulated by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy (left) and Robert Cotter, director of the Jersey City Division of City Planning, on a recent visit to the West Side Avenue facility.

Nominated by Bob Cotter, Director, Jersey City Division of City Planning for "Hatching Success in Jersey City" BDI was awarded the 2007 New Good Neighbor Award by the New Jersey Business and Industry Association on June 1, 2007. NJBIA annually recognizes the best and most exciting commercial and industrial development projects in New Jersey, and recognizes companies that have built, expanded or renovated buildings, thus improving both the landscape and the economy of the state. BDI was among an illustrious group of awardees, including the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at Basking Ridge, and the 1.3-million square feet Verizon Operations Center in Basking Ridge, the former AT&T headquarters.

BDI’s Receptionist SueLye Guerra contributes her special talent at NJCU

Our very own SueLye Guerra facilitated a course on April 25 for “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” at NJCU. She worked with a mostly teenage group, the youngest only 11. SueLye taught them how to channel detailed descriptions of memories for memoir writing and then translate those encounters into emotion to create poetry. The students completed two bodies of work each and courageously read them aloud in front of their peers. After the training, they admitted to feeling more comfortable writing, which made the workshop a great success.

St. Peter's College class on "Entrepreneurship" tours BDI

In March, Dr. Anthony Avallone stopped by BDI with his “Entrepreneurship” class. They toured the facility and met “real” entrepreneurs, asking 3 specific questions:
  • What factors influenced your decision to become an entrepreneur and how did you decide what field?
  • What was/is the hardest part of becoming an entrepreneur?
  • What is your best advice for fledgling entrepreneurs?
Students received valuable feedback, like Mutationengine’s comment that entrepreneurs have got to enjoy what they do because they’re going to spend a lot of time doing it! Students saw first-hand the skills, talents and attributes (like communication, ethics, leadership and teamwork) needed to grow a successful company.

Mutationengine produces documentary:   Justin Strawhand ’01 and Enrique Veloz ’01 spent a week in Haiti this summer, filming a documentary on Father Marc Boisvert, a former U.S. Navy chaplain who had earlier worked with Haitian refugees in Cuba. In 1998 Father Marc founded Pwoje Espwa (Project Hope) in Les Cayes, to provide a safe home, education and health care to more than 450 homeless, neglected, abandoned and forgotten children. Father Marc anticipates this number will rise to 1,000. Mutationengine specializes in multimedia productions for non-profit organizations and was selected because of its track record in this niche market. The 10-minute video will be used for education and fund-raising for the orphanage. Paul St. Florant ’07, an NJCU student from Haiti, is interning with the company and will help with post-production editing.
