Student Assistance Form
Student
We pride ourselves on being responsive to the needs of our students. The Dean’s Office has an “open door” to help students with academic related issues and can direct students to the correct offices to resolve their problems.

Do not hesitate to talk with your instructor if you are having difficulties, most can be resolved simply and easily if they are dealt with promptly and directly. If you are unable to come to an agreement with the instructor, speak with the chairperson of the department. If an issue cannot be resolved at the departmental level, the Dean’s Office is typically the next step. In most cases the office will attempt to bring the various parties together to resolve any differences.

When appropriate, individuals will be given a student assistance form from the Dean’s Office to document their problem and to assure the correct procedures is followed a formal grievance.

Grievance Procedure

The following procedure is available to students to resolve grievances regarding grading, course requirements, attendance requirements and other related issues.

Step 1: Discussion with faculty member.
Step 2: Appeal to the appropriate department chairperson.
Step 3: Appeal to the appropriate academic dean.

Grievances that are not resolved at the dean’s level may be referred to the Student Affairs Committee of the University Senate.

The Students Affairs Committee handles grievances involving students and faculty, staff or administrators. Upon receipt of a written appeal from a student, faculty member or administrator the committee first determines that a) the grievance has basis in fact and b) all normal avenues of grievance resolution (i.e., student-faculty discussion, chairperson and academic dean) have been exhausted. It then processes the grievance and reports its decision directly to the interested parties. It may take further action if necessary.

The entire procedure from presentation of written appeal to final decision should take no longer than six (6) weeks. The committee shall include at least one full-time faculty member from the College of Professional Studies, College of Education and College of Arts and Sciences. The chairperson or vice chairperson of the Senate shall also be a member.
