Professor Malley is the Chairperson of the Fire Science Department at New Jersey City University; a Bachelor of Science degree program focused on the development of fire officers. Earning Masters Degrees in Exercise Physiology and Applied Physiology from Queens College and Columbia University respectively, he also teaches courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Nutrition on the graduate and undergraduate levels. As a member of the New York City Fire Department for more than 22 years, Kevin worked in Engine, Ladder and Special Operations Units as a firefighter and fire officer. In 1996, he was appointed as the FDNY Director of Human Performance. In that position, he was responsible for the physical conditioning programs of FDNY’s Firefighter, EMS and civilian personnel. He also served as an FDNY representative on NFPA committees and worked on the IAFF/IAFC Joint Labor-Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative, Candidate Physical Ability Test and Peer Trainer program. Together with FDNY’s Dr. David Prezant and Randy Lawson at NIST, Kevin worked on a number of physical research investigations examining the physiological consequences of firefighting, the mechanisms of firefighter burn injuries and the NIST study of the 9/11 World Trade Center Emergency Service Operations. Keep Fit For The Fight, and he is researching the influence of circuit-type resistance training on nervous system control of the cardiovascular system in firefighters. As an athlete in college Kevin competed in gymnastics, earning a Coach’s Award at Suffolk County Community College and competing as a member of Cortland SUNY’s 1979 championship team. As a runner through his term with FDNY, Kevin completed over 20 marathons and won races at distances ranging from the mile to the marathon. Today his physical training happily centers on whatever the season inspires his two children, Kathleen and Kevin to pursue.
