DENIS ONIEAL
Superintendent of the National Fire Academy, United States Fire Administration
New Jersey City University Class of 1976. Bachelor of Science – Fire Science (Summa cum Laude). Dr. Denis Onieal was appointed to the Jersey City Fire Department in 1971. A veteran of the United States Army (1967-69), he rose through the ranks from Firefighter to Deputy Chief and Acting Chief in 1995 leading a uniformed force of over 600 Firefighters and Officers. A line Fire Officer for his entire career, he has received four department commendations from JCFD. Dr. Onieal earned a Bechelor of Science degree from NJCU (1976), a Master of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University (1978), and a Doctorate in Education from New York University (1990). As an adjunct professor, he taught in the Fire Science Department at NJCU from 1978 to 1983, and in the doctorate program at the Graduate School of Education, New York University from 1990 - 1995. Dr. Onieal was appointed Superintendent of the National Fire Academy in 1995; this past year (2009) the Academy trained over 120,000 firefighters and officers. As a national leader responsible for the professional development of the fire and emergency services, he has spoken in every State in the country, and lectured in China (twice), Taiwan, Korea, Australia (twice), New Zealand, England, and Scotland. Dr. Onieal has been recognized for his commitment and dedication to the fire service by numerous service organizations and publications throughout the country.
