On December 8th, the NJCU Fire Science Department was honored to have the New York City Fire Department Commissioner (Ret.) Thomas Von Essen present a seminar to our students and alumni on “Leadership in the Fire Department”. Commissioner Von Essen spoke to a standing room only audience of students, and alumni in the auditorium of Visual Arts building. Commissioner Von Essen captivated his audience with his knowledge and experience. He was able to speak on circumstances and events that have led him through his path as a Firefighter, Union President and ultimately Fire Commissioner. He spoke about the impact 9-11 has made on him and the fire service. The importance of how strong and poor leadership affects the fire service. He spoke of real life experiences and the importance of being able to grow and learn from these them and how to use these experiences to further develop one’s own leadership style as it relates to the fire service. At the conclusion of the lecture, the floor was opened up for questions. Several of the fire science students and alumni were able to ask questions pertinent to their own situations. The interaction was exciting and informative. Thomas Von Essen, Fire Commissioner, City of New York (Ret.) In his 30+ years with FDNY, Thomas Von Essen served; as a Firefighter in the South Bronx Ladder Co. 42, Union President 1993 - 1996, and ultimately Commissioner from 1996 – 2001.
