Adjunct Professor Thomas Von Essen, Fire Commissioner, City of New York (Ret.) In his 30+ years with FDNY, Thomas Von Essen served; as a Firefighter in the South Bronx Ladder Co. 42, Union President 1993 - 1996, and ultimately Commissioner from 1996 – 2001. Prof. Von Essen received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 in economics from
St.
Francis
College and received his Master’s degree in secondary education in 1982 from C.W. Post College. He served in the U.S. Navy prior to joining FDNY. Prof. Von Essen has received many awards and honors throughout his career including; three Honorary Doctorial degrees, two Medals of Honor, and a Humanitarian Award. Prof. Von Essen is presently a Risk/Safety Consultant partnering with such manufactures, industries and associations as Honeywell, Underwriters Labs and RJA Fire Protection Engineering.
