Mission
The Health Sciences Department at New Jersey City University is committed to preparing school nurses for this multidimensional role, in which they will function as child advocates, health educators, school and community leaders, independent health practitioners, and valued members of an interdisciplinary school team.
Goals
Students completing the Graduate School Nurse Certificate Program will be able to:
1) Synthesize the knowledge and skills necessary to practice nursing autonomously in an educational setting.
2) Assuming leadership roles in schools and communities. 3) Demonstrate critical thinking strategies, resourceful intervention techniques, and advanced communication skills in anticipation of their role as health care providers, health educators, child advocates, health resources, and interdisciplinary team members. 4) Contribute to a body of research in areas related to school health that support evidence-based school nursing practice. Accreditation The School Nurse Certification Program at New Jersey City University is accredited by The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE’s Reflective Urban Practitioner Model is embedded in the School Nurse Practicum experience at New Jersey City University. Certifying Body The Graduate School Nurse Certificate Program has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Education Higher Education Quality Initiatives since June 2005. History New Jersey City University has been educating nurses for the school setting since 1936. We are intensely proud of our long-term affiliation with this highly specialized practice. For many years, NJCU was the only institution offering School Nurse Certification. Initially, the School Nurse Certification Program was offered on the undergraduate level, as part of a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science; and as a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program. However, in 2003, The National Consortium of School Nurse Educators, an affiliate of the National Association of School Nurses, supported a Masters Degree as entry level into practice for school nurses. In keeping pace with this and with the expanding role of the school nurse, the Health Sciences Department at NJCU has developed a Graduate School Nurse Certificate Program. The program was approved by the N. J. DOE in June 2005. This new program was developed for School Nurses with a Bachelor Degree seeking to earn graduate credit while earning their School Nurse Certificate. It is anticipated that after taking the prescribed 30-credit hour program for School Nurse Certification, students will take the additional 15 credits necessary to receive a Masters Degree in Health Sciences.
