History

New Jersey City University has been educating nurses for the school setting since 1936. We are intensely proud of our long-term affiliation with this highly specialized practice. For many years, NJCU was the only institution offering School Nurse Certification. Initially, the School Nurse Certification Program was offered on the undergraduate level, as part of a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science; and as a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program.  However, in 2003, The National Consortium of School Nurse Educators, an affiliate of the National Association of School Nurses, supported a Masters Degree as entry level into practice for school nurses. In keeping pace with this and with the expanding role of the school nurse, the Health Sciences Department at NJCU has developed a Graduate School Nurse Certificate Program. The program was approved by the N. J. DOE in June 2005. This new program was developed for School Nurses with a Bachelor Degree seeking to earn graduate credit while earning their School Nurse Certificate. It is anticipated that after taking the prescribed 30-credit hour program for School Nurse Certification, students will take the additional 15 credits necessary to receive a Masters Degree in Health Sciences.
