Undergraduate Student at NJCU

The mission of the department is to provide students with
  • a broad knowledge in the health sciences,
  • social competency skills necessary for employment in diverse urban environments,
  • the ability to engage in critical thinking,
  • skills to interpret data
  • a multi-faceted diverse curriculum that reflects the heterogeneity of the population that students will be expected to serve.
The Health Sciences Department undergraduate curricula are competency and standards based. The classes follow the National Standards of the American Association of Health Education (AAHE). The curriculum is built on theoretical based models, health knowledge, skills development, and the application of putting theory into practice. This is accomplished through writing research papers, solving case-studies, participating in agency site visits, internships, faculty arranged field trips and other learner-centered activities.
Community Health
The community health track prepares entry-level health education specialists with a diverse range of skills such as planning community health education programs and advocacy for diverse populations. Our Community Health Career Guide is available is available by clicking the Career Guide link.
 
 
Teacher of Health Education Program

Completion of this major prepares students to assume the ­responsibilities of a certified health education teacher for grades K-12 in the state of New Jersey. The certification is built on the Reflective Urban Practitioner Model and the National Health Education Standards, which clearly articulate the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed by teaching professionals working in diverse urban settings.
Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences with School Nurse Certification
This is a New Jersey State Department of Education approved program meeting the requirements for the Educational Services Certification Endorsement as a Certified School Nurse. This endorsement authorizes the holder to perform nursing services and to teach in areas related to health in public schools in grades preschool through 12.
Students must hold current CPR and AED Certification, New Jersey license as a Registered Nurse, and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. To be considered for admission into this program, a student must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and a minimum of five years work experience in nursing.
