PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The capstone of the program is an accounting research project – the Master’s thesis. Under the guidance of a thesis advisor, the student conducts extensive library research, compiles empirical data (where applicable) and writes a comprehensive research paper on a current accounting-related issue. The objective of the project is to connect the many concepts and skills learned by the student in the program with the student’s research efforts. The program is a minimum of 33 credits for those applicants who have an undergraduate degree in business with a concentration in accounting. If your undergraduate degree is in a business field other than accounting (such as management, finance or marketing) you will be required to complete a minimum of 45 graduate credits, as you will need the foundation core accounting courses (12 credits). If an applicant’s undergraduate degree is in a field other than business it would be necessary to take at least five undergraduate prerequisite courses, including Principles of Accounting 1 and 2, Finance, Statistics, and Law, before applying to the program. Students typically begin part-time study in the Fall semester. Six credits per semester is the normal course load. Courses are offered in the evenings during the Fall and Spring semesters on campus or online. In certain cases, it may be possible to start in the Spring semester if prerequisites, where required, have been met. The GMAT is required – and higher scores are viewed more favorably. However, we will consider all elements of your application, including your undergraduate grade point average and writing skills. Your application and transcripts will be reviewed by the Graduate Admissions office. For more information about the GMAT please go to http://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT.
