Campus Escort Services

The Public Safety Department will provide security escorts to and from campus facilities for anyone. This service may be requested by calling the Public Safety Department at 201-200-3128.

Public Safety escorts may be performed as a foot escort or a vehicle escort. If you are in a vehicle, you will be asked to wait in your vehicle with the lights on so the officer can locate you or if you are in any other area you will be instructed to meet the officer at a designated place.

The Public Safety Department encourages the campus community to use the "buddy system" or request an escort whenever possible rather than traveling alone.

At NJCU, Public Safety is a priority. Safety measures are in place and continuous attention is given to new ways to increase safety awareness and promote a crime-free environment. We are committed to providing a safe and secure institution where all members of the campus community can work, live and learn - free from the limiting constraints of crime.

The Knight Rider

In the interest of community security and safety, the NJCU Public Safety Department has a Security Escort Van Service, called The Knight Rider, providing transportation for members of the University Community within a ten block radius of the University.

The Knight Rider will operate from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am seven days a week. The Knight Rider is not intended to provide transportation to the parking lot areas serviced by the Parking Lot Shuttle Service during their regular hours of operation.

Guidelines for use:

All requests for the Public Safety Security Escort Van can be made by calling the Public Safety Department at extension 3128. We will pick you up at your location.
A valid GothicCard is required for admission to the van.
In order to maximize the availability of the shuttle the service area will be limited to a 10 block radius of the University.
The service is not intended for transportation to and from employee's residence.

Service Area:

The service area consists of Danforth Avenue to Ege Avenue and Route 440 to Ocean Avenue.

1. New Jersey Transit Light Rail (Claremont & West Side Avenue)
2. Hudson Mall (Route 440)
3. Danforth Avenue Plaza (Rite-Aid Drug Store, etc.)
4. Mary McCloud Bethune Recreational Center (MLK Dr. & Fulton Ave.)

  2. Visual Arts Building
  3. John J. Moore Athletic Center
  4. Business Development Incubator
  5. University Academy Charter High School

The Buddy System

The Public Safety Department encourages the campus community to use the "buddy system" or request an escort whenever possible rather than traveling alone.

The Public Safety Department believes that there are safety in numbers so, if possible, travel with a friend (buddy) to locations on and off campus during hours of darkness or rarely traveled walkways.

Basic Street Sense

Wherever you are on the street, in an office or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or subway -- stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.
Send the message that you're calm, confident, and know where you're going.
Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.
Know the neighborhood where you live and work. Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals and restaurants, or stores that are open.
