Rita OleasThe Environmental Health & Safety Department is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working and learning atmosphere throughout the University through technical support, proactive training programs, and periodic auditing of health and safety practices & regulatory compliance.

Mission Statement

To establish a liaison by which the Environmental, Health and Safety committee and the Campus Community can communicate in a collaborative manner to effectively address environmental, health and safety related issues;

To foster a safe and healthy living and working environment in an urban university campus;
 
To maintain a safe and secure environment in which students may learn; faculty and staff can work and personally grow; and visitors feel comfortable;
 
To provide and maintain, in association with the Public Safety Department, this atmosphere throughout the University throughout technical support, periodic and relative information and training programs, consulting services, and frequent auditing of health and safety practices and regulatory compliance.
 

Goals & Objectives

  1. To promote and increase EHS awareness through classroom training sessions, one-on-one proactive safety talks, electronic communications, a visible campus presence and dedicated marketing (i.e. fairs, booklets);
  2. To ensure individual safety and health and reduce injuries on campus through identifying and correcting unsafe actions, practices or equipment;
  3. To encourage reporting of EHS concerns by the University Community through easily available phone numbers, personal contacts, and work-orders;
  4. To ensure compliance with Local, State, and Federal Regulatory Agencies in all areas of EHS through periodic observations and assessments;
  5. To strive to be part of a best-in-class university Public Safety Department through sharing best EHS practices with other universities, monitoring current EHS events, keeping updated on latest EHS software and technology, auditing for continuous improvement, partnering with related departments when developing, reviewing and revising policies and procedures, and working collaboratively with faculty, staff and students on EHS related projects.
