First Year and Transfer Students Residential Experience

In an effort to support the University’s vision of proactively engaging our community through creative service initiatives, and at the same time supporting the retention and academic success of our resident students, the Office of Residence Life has instituted several programs for all first year residents in Co-Op Hall.

Co-Op Hall is a traditional style residential facility, housing freshmen and some upper class transfer residents. The co-ed facility is staffed with four Resident Assistants and one Resident Counselor, allowing a hands-on, student centered approach to management. The students are able to reside among peers benefit from the services and programs designed specifically for first year residents. In Co-Op Hall there is an early check-in process, orientation weekend, structured quiet hours, community seminars/competition, support groups, and other leadership opportunities.

“College Orientation & Life Skills, Transition Counseling, Academic Support Services, Passport to Great Adventure: Educational Programs, and Residence Hall Community Development Activities” are five support programs that serve to bridge the transition into college life, encourage a life-long learning adventure at NJCU and support the freedom of learning outside of the classroom.

  1. College Orientation & Life Skill Programs

First year residents and some transfer students must attend a series of “college orientation and life skills” programs. Scheduled within the first month of the semester, these programs focus on addressing various transitional issues such as alcohol/drug abuse, sex, sexual health and responsibility, time management, coping skills, and other college orientation workshop and seminars.

  1. Transition Counseling

To assist in making the transitional experience for all first year residents a great one, counseling is available. Transitional counseling completed by the Coordinator of the Residence Life provides individual counseling, campus and community resources, policy review and assessment, tutorial, professional referrals and supportive services for all first year residents to obtain the necessary resources needed to enhance academics, social, and leadership development within NJCU community.

  1. Academic Support Services

Working in collaboration with several major departments on campus, academic support services are organized to provide tutoring for all resident students.

    • Peer Tutoring available: Work-study funded
