NJCU Residence Life Recycling and Waste Management Program

"Recycling is the gateway to sustainability. Once a person realizes the huge positive impact that a small daily act like recycling makes‚ it becomes much easier for that person to embrace other lifestyle choices that also make a huge difference."

The Department of Facilities and Construction Management /Housekeeping has been helping NJCU students to reduce reuse and recycle since 2005. With your help Residence Life has join in on there effort for waste reduction in our residence halls.

The Recycling efforts in Residence Life is coordinated between the Office of Residence Life and the Housekeeping Department. Our goal is to provide efficient, friendly trash and recycling services to the Campus community. We seek to divert as much material from the landfill as possible, therefore saving landfill costs and earning revenue. Through everyone's participation we can make New Jersey City University an environmentally responsible campus.

Residence Hall Recycling Bin Locations:

  • Co-Op Hall 1st Main Entrance
  • Vodra Hall 3rd Floor Laundry Room
  • 2040 Apt. – 1st Floor Laundry Room
Know the Difference between Trash and Recycling! It is the responsibility of every student and employee to recognize what is recycling and what is trash. The next time you throw something out, ask yourself "Is this trash or is it recycling?" and then use the correct receptacle. Remember, the choices you make as a consumer affect the amount of trash and recycling that you create! You can make a difference!

Recycling Do's and Don’ts
*Only recycle cans, plastic and glass bottles!
  1. Plastic bottles must be empty. Empty sodas, milk, food containers, etc., in sink or trash (food scraps). Plastic cups for smoothies and coffee drinks cannot be recycled in the residence halls.
  2. Please empty food cans and pour out liquids Please give soup or other messy cans a quick rinse before tossing them in the container.
  3. Paper and chipboard all go in the paper bins. Blue bins only… Chipboard is cereal boxes, tissue boxes, most food boxes, etc., and is much thinner than cardboard (yet thicker than paper) these goes into the garbage container.
  4. Recycling contaminated with trash often gets thrown away. Housekeeping does not have time to sort recycling. We provide containers for students to separate their own recycling. Our job is to collect the containers we provide to the students and employees!
  5. Have pride about where you live; if you see a trash or recycling container full, don’t pile on more trash and recycling! Try to go to another or wait a day to see if they are emptied. We are putting out more bins and recycling areas where needed and will consider adding more once we notice the recycling is successful.

To learn more about our program‚ how it works‚ and how you can get involved‚ please contact the Office of Residence Life tlawson@njcu.edu  or wkim@njcu.edu, Housekeeping Supervisor.
