Special Note to Seniors:
Keeping The Commencement Ceremony Tradition Alive
In February 2007, the graduation clearance committee publicly announced to the senior class that graduates would no longer have their names called, or walk across the stage to receive their diploma. This decision was made due to graduates’ actions during the two previous commencement ceremonies. After graduates’ walked across the stage and received their degree, the majority of seniors refused to return to their seat. Instead, many left after hearing their names called and receiving their degrees on stage, without returning to their seat, and those who did return to their seat left shortly after. Graduates’ refused to listen to ushers and some even threatened bodily harm to ushers, if they were not allowed to leave. By the time the last graduate received their degree the arena was nearly empty. This showed great disrespect towards their fellow peers, their families, the Senior Class President, and the President of the University, Carlos Hernandez. The senior class representatives; the Student Government Organization Executive Board; student leaders; The Gothic Times and many students, came together in order to change the decision that was made only a couple of months before graduation. After a long battle, the efforts of the entire student body were not in vain. The graduation committee reversed its decision to not call names asgraduates walk across the stage. A solution was proposed that was acceptable to everyone that would enable us to continue a tradition that many schools have already abolished. It was decided that two staff members from each college would call graduates’ name consecutively in order to shorten the process of name-calling asgraduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. This solution proved to be phenomenal. Close to 90% of the senior class graduates returned to their seats and sat through the entire ceremony. This lead President Hernandez to say it was the one of the best commencement ceremonies he had attendedas President of this university. We ask the graduating class of ’09 to demonstrate the same respect and unity for our upcoming graduation ceremony. It’s more than just hearing your name; it’s about celebrating the achievements of everyone in our community that worked so diligently to get us to this momentous occasion. Spread the word to your fellow peers that we can all make a difference not only for our graduation, but for the graduations to come after we are gone.
